» Crowdie «
Vegetarian, fresh cheese made from cow's milk. It usually has a log shape but it is also sold in tubs. The cheese is made from skimmed milk. It is said that Crowdie has been introduced into Scotland by the Vikings in the eighth century. It is called Gruth in Gaelic. The texture is creamy, yet crumbly and it has a slightly sour taste. The blend of Crowdie and double cream called Gruth Dhu has been introduced recently by cheesemaker Susannah Stone. This cheese is formed into oval shapes and covered in toasted pinhead oats and crushed peppercorns.
